Diesel 10 Returns.

Based on the Railway Series by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry.
Written by ArthurEngine.

Plot:
It was autumn on the Island of Sodor. A large diesel with a giant claw was returning to the railway. He was rushing at great speed. He whooshed past James.
“Watch my paintwork!” shouted James.
The diesel rushed past Henry.
“Trembling tracks! What was that?!” asked Henry.
Later, the Fat Controller had invited all the engines to Knapford station.
“As you all know,” the Fat Controller began, “there is more than enough work for all of you on this railway, so I’ve ordered another engine to help you, and here he is now!”

The engine came into their sight. The engines gasped.
“This,” the Fat Controller began, “is Diesel Ten. I have arranged for him to come and work on the railway for a while.”
The engines were worried. Diesel Ten looked very scary. He even has a huge crushing crunching claw.
“Er, sir?” Edward asked the Fat Controller. “Why does this engine have a claw?”
The Fat Controller pondered. “Hmm…I wonder too.”

That night, the Fat Controller had ordered Diesel Ten to take the Flying Kipper. Henry was disappointed.
“Why does Diesel Ten get to take the Flying Kipper instead of me?” asked Henry.
“Because he’s eager to do work on my railway,” The Fat Controller said. “so he’s doing your job tonight. Tomorrow, you will be pulling the local.”
Henry was confused, but pleased. James on the other hand, was disappointed.

Diesel Ten has reached Brendam Harbour, he was slowly backing onto the Flying Kipper very slowly, but suddenly, Cranky’s hook snapped and Diesel Ten was covered in smelly fish!
“Hey! Watch where you’re going, you silly diesel!” said Cranky crossly. “And where’s Henry? He’s the one who usually takes the Flying Kipper at night!”
“The Fat Controller chose me to take it tonight,” said Diesel Ten crossly, “to show how eager I am to work on this railway.”
“Fair enough.” Said Cranky.

Diesel Ten was impatient. He had to wait until all the fish had been cleared away before he could start. But the Flying Kipper was late that night, and Diesel Ten arrived back at Tidmouth feeling tired.
“What’s that fishy smell?” asked Edward.
“Shh!” said Henry. “It’s Diesel Ten! He’s been taking the Flying Kipper last night.”
The Fat Controller arrived to see Diesel Ten. He wasn’t happy.
“Diesel Ten! Why was the Flying Kipper so late?” he asked sternly.
“Sorry, sir!” said Diesel Ten. “I collided into Cranky’s hook, causing him to drop fish onto me.”

The Fat Controller was stern.
“Hmm…you should have been more careful about your surroundings, but it was an accident. And after you’ve had a washdown, you shall pull Gordon’s express.
Gordon was shocked at this.
“But sir!” groaned Gordon.
“Now now, Gordon.” The Fat Controller said. “It’s Diesel Ten’s turn to take the express today. I know you, James, Henry and Bear are the ones who usually take it, now it’s Diesel Ten’s turn. Today, you shall be pulling coal trucks!”
Gordon was cross! He could not believe what he had heard.

When Diesel Ten was nice and clean, he went to Knapford station. When he got there, all the passengers gasped at the sight of Diesel Ten.
“What a monstrous sight!” said one passenger.
“We cannot allow it!” said another.
“It’s okay, passengers.” Diesel Ten said. “I’ll try my best to give you a smooth ride.”
The passengers reluctantly climbed on board, the guard blew his whistle, waved his green flag and got into the brake coach, and Diesel Ten started off.

But Diesel Ten’s ride wasn’t smooth at all. He was grumpily bumping the coaches, causing the passengers to have a bouncy ride. When he had reached the viaduct, there was Henry taking the local right in front of him.
“Get out of my way, Twinkletoes!” Diesel Ten growled. “Express coming through!”
Diesel Ten tried to go as fast as he could, but as he collided into Henry’s brake coach, the unexpected happened. The coupling to the express broke, Diesel Ten came off the rails, and he fell off the viaduct. Luckily, he fell onto a barge. The barge had taken him to Tidmouth harbour.

There, waiting for him, was the Fat Controller.
“Oh dear,” Diesel Ten thought. “What will Fat Hatt say?”
“Diesel Ten!” the Fat Controller said. “You have caused confusion and delay! It now comes to my senses that I may have been wrong to ask you back to Sodor!”
“I am sorry, sir.” Said Diesel Ten. “But Henry was going too slow with his train.”
“Local trains are slower than the express.” Said the Fat Controller. “You should have been more careful, but it was an accident. You shall go to the works to be mended, and you shall receive a new name while there.”
Diesel Ten was pleased.

So while Diesel Ten was at the works, Gordon went back to pulling the express. However, he and all the other engines had to go slowly when crossing the viaduct as Diesel Ten’s derailment had broken one of the parapets.
“Oh, the indignity!” said Gordon. “Having this bridge to be repaired again. Now I’ll be late, all thanks to that no-good Diesel Ten!”
Even Henry was cross with Diesel Ten.
“That silly diesel had almost caused one of my coaches to be derailed!” he grumbled. “Twinkletoes indeed!”

Later, at the works, the Fat Controller came to see Diesel Ten. Diesel Ten looked miserable.
“I see that you are sorry.” He said. “I hope now that once you’ve mended, you will learn how to do your jobs carefully and properly.”
“Yes, sir.” Said Diesel Ten. “I will, sir. I am truly sorry, sir.”
“That’s a good engine!” the Fat Controller said.

So after Diesel Ten had been mended, he was sent back to work. Now he is as careful as can be. He only takes the express when Gordon, James, Henry or Bear are ill or busy. Now he only takes the Flying Kipper when Henry or Arthur are ill or busy. And on some occasions, he takes trucks whenever other engines don’t feel like it. The Fat Controller had even given him a new name. His new name is Twinkletoes. It suits him, doesn’t it?
Thought I'd write a story about our favourite evil diesel, Twinkletoes.
